The Benefits of a Facet Injection in Keller

The spine is a very complex part of the human body and it is made up of multiple elements, all of which may experience some form of difficulty. One of the elements that exist in the spine is the facet joints. These joints are found along the entire length of the spine and form a stabilizing feature which is located between the vertebrae. The facet joints help with the stability of the spine and can assist us with the twisting motion of the spine as well. This is seen throughout the length of the spine, although the facet joints may offer varying degrees of flexibility, depending upon the part of the spinal column that is being considered.

At times, the facet joints may also be an issue that is resulting in pain in the back. As a result of that pain, your Doctor may feel that it is necessary for you to have a facet injection. These injections can help to reduce pain that is being experienced as a result of problems in the area but they are typically given in order to identify the specific areas which need further treatments.

The primary benefit of facet injections is to reduce the pain that may be a problem for you. When you have a problem with the facets in the spinal column, you may not only have direct pain in the area but also radiating pain and other issues, such as numbness or tingling. This type of problem can occur for any number of different reasons but it is common in individuals who suffer from traumatic injuries, such as whiplash. Facet injections may also be given to individuals who have tried other forms of treatment for their back pain unsuccessfully.

The Procedure of a Facet Joint Injection - Keller

Facet joint injections are typically an outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. Although you will not be out for the procedure, your doctor may feel that some sedation is necessary in order to make you more comfortable with what is taking place. This is something that typically varies, depending upon your tolerance and your comfort level for what is being performed.

More than likely, the facet injections will be given while you are lying on your stomach. If you are having the injection done in your neck area, your Doctor may feel that another position is more appropriate. After a local anesthetic has been given to numb the area, and injection will be given into the facet joint and a contrasting dye will be inserted. This will help the doctor to locate the exact position where further injections will be given.

Facet injections likely contain an anesthetic, which will provide an immediate, numbing relief for any pain that is being experienced in the area. This will help the physician to identify the fact that you are being given the injections in the proper area and that it is a procedure that is right for your condition. Anti-inflammatory steroid medications will also be injected during facet injections. This will help to reduce inflammation in the area, which will give long-term pain relief. Although the temporary effect of the anesthetic may wear off shortly after the procedure takes place, the benefit of the steroid injection will typically kick in within a few days to provide some relief for your discomfort. Your Doctor may give injections in more than one facet joint, depending upon your needs.

One of the issues that can occur with the facet joints is for osteoarthritis to take place within them. Facet joints contain cartilage, which can wear down over the course of time or may disappear for any number of different reasons. This can cause joint inflammation, pain and other symptoms. Facet injections may be able to help to reduce the pain that you are experiencing by reducing inflammation.
